Ionic foot detox machines, also called ionic foot baths, are offered in some spas and sold for home use. You place your feet in warm salt water, the machine runs a small electric current, and after 20 to 30 minutes the water turns brown, orange or black. The colour is presented as toxins leaving your body through your feet. Here is how these machines really work and what the evidence says.

How an ionic foot detox machine works

The machine has an array of metal electrodes that sits in a basin of warm water with added salt. When it is switched on, an electric current passes through the salty water. This causes electrolysis: the metal electrodes slowly corrode and react with the salt and water, producing rust-coloured particles and bubbles.

Why the water changes colour

The colour comes mainly from the corroding electrodes and the salt reacting in the water, along with any dirt or skin cells from your feet. Investigations and a small published study have found that the water changes colour even when no feet are placed in it, and that the water does not contain higher levels of toxins after a session with feet in it. The colour charts some sellers use to “diagnose” which organ is being detoxed have no scientific basis.

Can toxins leave through the feet?

Not in any meaningful way. Your body clears waste products mainly through the liver, kidneys, gut and lungs. Sweat removes only tiny amounts of some substances, and the skin on the feet is not a route for drawing toxins out of the bloodstream. Read more in our post on the sweating detox myth. The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes there is little evidence that detox programmes or products remove toxins (NCCIH).

Are ionic foot baths safe?

For most healthy people, a session is unlikely to cause harm beyond the cost. However, they are not suitable for:

  • People with pacemakers or other implanted electrical devices
  • Pregnant women
  • People with open wounds, infections or poor circulation in the feet, including some people with diabetes
  • People with epilepsy

Shared spa basins should be properly cleaned between clients to avoid infections.

Is there any benefit?

A warm foot soak can be relaxing, and relaxation is a real benefit. You can get the same effect from a plain warm footbath with Epsom salts at home, without paying for the “detox” claim. For a full-body option, try our detox bath recipes.

What about detox foot pads?

Detox foot pads work on a similar idea and change colour overnight. The colour change is usually caused by moisture from sweat reacting with ingredients in the pad. See our article on detox foot pads.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the foot bath water turn brown?

Mainly because the metal electrodes corrode in salty water when the current runs. It happens even without feet in the water.

How often should I do an ionic foot detox?

There is no health reason to use one. If you enjoy it as a relaxing treatment, the frequency is a personal choice, but it is not a medical treatment.
